Every gate has to be shut at once. Owen can stand at only one. For a year, Owen Hale has turned repairs into skills and an abandoned county yard into a home. Now his hands are wearing out. Eli and Cora are ready to take on more of the workshop's repairs, and Owen keeps finding reasons to stay at the bench. The readings Mara takes from the isolated node truck at Ridgeway keep climbing. The strange power that still runs some of the valley's facilities is pushing harder every week, and no one knows how much longer it can be held back. There is one way to end it: shut every gate still connected to that power at the same moment, then hold them all closed for twelve hours while it pushes back. But the people at those gates depend on that power. A water house, a grain store, a pump station and the crews at Black Cut can't simply switch off. Each needs another way to keep its water and work running—and a full shift to prove it—before anyone asks them to close a gate. At home, Ridgeway still has a winter to feed. The workshop takes paid repairs for food and diesel, the hall has to be finished before the cold, and seventeen people have only so many working hours. Owen has finally earned a fifth skill slot, but he has six skills and five slots, so one always stays behind. On the day the gates close, he will stand at one point. Everywhere else, the outcome belongs to people with their own trades, their own tools and their own call to make—and his only link to them is a chain of borrowed radios, every message repeated word for word. • Skills with hard limits—and one always left behind • A climax won by the whole crew, not one hero • Scarce food, fuel and working hours shape every decision • Base-building that finishes what the earlier books began • No harem, no chosen one, and no new power to save the day The fifth and final Fieldwright novel.
