Based on the results of an examination, the Board of Healers has stripped Alexander of his ability to practice medicine, but he is given a chance at revenge. By practicing every day, Alexander slowly but surely recovers his gift. His mentor gives him a curious tome written many years ago by a long-forgotten scientist, which describes an alternative method of using magical energy. This insight could help bring about a breakthrough in magical medicine, as it would level the playing field, allowing weaker healers to work just as effectively as their stronger colleagues. But if he were to share this incredible knowledge, it could spell trouble for Alexander; the powerful mages of the capital city, enraged at facing serious competition for the first time, could seek revenge. As if that weren't enough, Alexander's family becomes involved in a struggle with conspirators bent on overthrowing the throne, who then turn their attention to the Sklifosofskys. By some miracle, Alexander manages to survive multiple assassination attempts, and he is forced to go into hiding. But there's no guarantee that will save him: he's carrying a powerful artifact that some highly influential people will stop at nothing to find.
